The CKD-EPI 2021 equation estimates glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from serum creatinine, age and sex, with no race coefficient. An eGFR of 90+ is stage G1, 60–89 G2, 45–59 G3a, 30–44 G3b, 15–29 G4 and under 15 G5. Cockcroft-Gault creatinine clearance is a separate, weight-based estimate used for drug dosing.

eGFR vs creatinine clearance — which do I need?
eGFR (CKD-EPI 2021) is the number used to stage chronic kidney disease and to decide on referral. Creatinine clearance (Cockcroft-Gault) is weight-based and is still what most drug labels specify for renal dose adjustment. They rarely match exactly, and that is expected.
What is a normal eGFR?
Above 90 mL/min/1.73m² is normal kidney function (G1). 60–89 is mildly reduced (G2) and is common with age. Below 60 sustained for three months or more defines chronic kidney disease. Below 30 usually warrants nephrology referral.
Why the 2021 equation dropped the race coefficient
The 2009 CKD-EPI equation applied a multiplier for Black patients, which produced higher eGFR values and could delay referral and transplant listing. The 2021 refit removed it. This calculator uses the race-free 2021 version.
What can make a single result misleading
Creatinine rises with muscle mass, high protein or creatine intake, and some drugs; it falls in low muscle mass and pregnancy. Acute illness and dehydration move it too. A single value is a snapshot — trending several results is far more informative.

- Does this eGFR calculator use race?
- No. It uses the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation recommended by the NKF-ASN task force.
- What creatinine clearance formula is used?
- Cockcroft-Gault: ((140 − age) × weight in kg × 0.85 if female) ÷ (72 × serum creatinine in mg/dL).
- Is a low eGFR always kidney disease?
- No. Chronic kidney disease requires an eGFR under 60 that persists for at least three months, or other markers of kidney damage such as albuminuria.
