How to read your own lab report without panicking

Lab reports arrive in your inbox before anyone has explained them. The asterisks and bold flags do their work immediately, and a value 0.1 outside the range can ruin a week.
A little structure makes the document readable, and usually less alarming than it first appears.
What a reference range actually is
For most tests, the reference range is the interval containing the central 95% of results from a healthy reference population. By construction, one in twenty healthy people falls outside it on any given test.
Run a twenty-analyte panel on a perfectly healthy person and the probability that at least one value is flagged is around 64%. A single mildly out-of-range value on a broad panel is the expected result, not a finding.
Check the units before anything else
Unit confusion causes more unnecessary alarm than any other single factor, particularly when comparing results across countries or reading advice written for a different system.
- Glucose: mg/dL in the US, mmol/L in the UK and much of Europe — divide by 18 to convert
- Cholesterol: mg/dL to mmol/L, multiply by 0.0259
- Triglycerides: mg/dL to mmol/L, multiply by 0.0113
- HbA1c: percentage (NGSP) versus mmol/mol (IFCC) — 6.5% equals 48 mmol/mol
- Creatinine: mg/dL versus µmol/L — multiply mg/dL by 88.4
Distinguish 'flagged' from 'clinically significant'
Some flags demand same-day attention: potassium far outside range, a critically low haemoglobin, glucose above 300 mg/dL with symptoms, or a sharply falling eGFR. Laboratories usually telephone these.
Most flags do not. A slightly raised liver enzyme, a marginal white cell count, a tumour marker one unit above the cut-off — these warrant a repeat test and context, not an emergency.
The trend is the real result
Biological and analytical variation means the same blood drawn twice can produce noticeably different numbers. A creatinine of 1.0 followed by 1.1 is almost certainly noise; a rise from 0.9 to 1.1 to 1.3 over eighteen months is a signal.
This is the strongest argument for keeping your own results in one place. Laboratories change, clinics change, and nobody reconstructs your five-year trend at a fifteen-minute appointment.
Prepare three questions
Arrive with: which of these results actually matters, what is the most likely explanation, and what should be repeated and when. That converts a printout into a plan.
